Amazon Glacier is a low-cost online storage web service that provides reliable storage for data archiving and backup.Amazon Glacier is designed for data that is infrequently accessed and for which retrieval times of 3 to 5 hours are acceptable. Storage costs as little as $0.01 per gigabyte per month. Amazon hopes this new service will move businesses from on-premise tape backup drives to cloud-based backup storage.ZDNet says, that according to private e-mail, Glacier runs on "inexpensive commodity hardware components", which are suggested to be high numbers of high-capacity low-cost hard discs. It is possible, that custom low-RPM hard drives are used in custom racks with proprietary logic. An unlimited amount of data can be uploaded. Downloading data (retrieval) is free unless more than 5% of the stored data is downloaded per month, in which case there is a fee of $0.01 per GB. Data transfer between AWS regions is free up to 1 GB per month, after which a sliding scale fee starts at $0.12 per GB. Data stored less than 3 months incurs a charge of $0.03 per GB.
