Open Rails is an open source simulator that is designed to run Microsoft Train Simulator content.
According to the official description, the project provides a train simulator for the many routes, rolling stock and activities that were developed for Microsoft's Train Simulator (MSTS) project.
The open nature of the MSTS platform meant that many free and commercial had been developed, but a planned sequel to MSTS was cancelled in 2009, leading to the formation of the Open Rails project, whose official goal is to secure the future for the MSTS content.
