Naver Whale (Hangul: ??? ??) is a freeware web browser developed by Naver Corporation. The browser is also available in English. The browser became available on Android on April 13, 2018.
Whale’s forte is its focus on design, which allows users to select their own skins and offers a slew of choices for clocks and tiles to view when opening a new tab. Taking the opposite approach of minimalist Chrome, Whale iterates all of the leading browser’s functionality and more.
But like Google’s Chrome, whose omnibox allows users to search directly from the address bar, Naver’s Whale directs search terms directly into the Naver search engine. It’s even built on Chromium, Google’s own open-source web browser project on which Chrome is also based.
On Whale, an array of tools neatly tucked in a sidebar allows for in-browser translation with Naver’s neural machine translator Papago, while the Belly feature (whose icon is, for some reason, instead shaped like a whale’s tail) is a space to store snippets like social media posts, YouTube videos, images and news.
Especially useful are a screenshot feature that lets users clip from websites and instantly store them in-browser, and a memo feature for jotting quick text notes.
Arguably the coolest feature on Whale is “omnitasking” -- a split-screen feature that lets you browse two sites in the same tab, with an adjustable divider. Imagine not having to finagle between tabs or set up separate windows that clutter and slow down your computer.
Also in Whale, by dragging a certain word within the browser, users can conduct a “quick search” of the word and immediately view the results in a pop-up window. Whale also connects to Naver’s artificially intelligent translation app Papago to translate foreign languages including English and Chinese into Korean.
Whale also offers a voice recognition function that will process spoken commands, as well as a function that automatically reads the text on a webpage out loud for users.
