老和尚於清光緒十八年，（西元一八九二年）農曆十月廿六日，誕生於福建省惠安縣，俗姓黃，名文來，因家境清寒，其兄無錢娶妻，師四歲，父母將他賣至晉江縣李姓農家為養子。養母茹素，師於七歲時亦自願隨母茹素。稍長養父母相繼去世，師即到南洋謀生，隨當地同鄉上山砍運木材，某日，他預言輕便推車會出事，警惕同事勿搭乘，後推車果真翻落山谷，遂有同事戲言其料事如神又茹素，何不回泉州老家修道？師似有領悟，即乘船回閩。一九二七年，師三十六歲，於泉州承天寺，禮上瑞下芳法師披剃出家，法名照敬。即先從最基本之外坡勞役做起，四十二歲方去受戒。方丈上轉下塵老和尚教他要「吃人家不吃的，做人家不做的，以後你就知！」由於目不識字，又身材瘦小，常常受人欺侮，但師忍辱含垢，決志苦修，操持粗活賤役，無怨無悔。幾年下來，由「忍辱、利他」的苦行功德中，心胸逐漸寬廣，慢慢擺脫人我的限囿，離「我相」的一切顛倒煩惱，身心漸定，有一天在鼓山寺的佛七當中，得証「念佛三昧」。後登城北涼山碧霄岩潛修，不料誤入了虎洞，而老虎並不加害，次日反攜來多隻小虎在洞口跳躍玩耍，狀極愉悅，這乃「以心動心」。山下居民遂稱為「伏虎和尚」。師常入定，曾經一定數月，不食不動，甚至鼻息全無，樵夫誤認師已圓寂，走告承天寺，轉塵老和尚偕同弘一大師上山探視，經弘一大師彈指三下，師乃出定，泉州一帶為之轟動。凡茲歲月，已歷數載（年數難以確定），後師下山返寺住約五、六年。民國三十六年（西元一九四七年），師年五十有六，由福建廈門乘英航號輪船渡海來台。遂即隨緣化度，普勸念佛，曾有台北法華寺夜度日本鬼魂之事，「果子和尚」譽滿全台。海外華僑亦多慕名，皈依弟子數以萬計，創建寺宇十數處，民國四十四年，在台北縣土城興建之承天禪寺，乃紀念其大陸祖庭承天禪寺而命名之。師八十多歲時，表示即將捨報，經弟子們一再懇求，並請懺雲法師主持彌陀佛七，乃獲慈悲俯允，延緩時日。但師曾向悟明長老言：日後再傳一次戒就要離開世間。民國七十年，又於高雄建妙通寺，民國七十四年十月傳授三壇大戒，農曆年前十二月二十六日，北返承天寺，一一囑咐，並言圓寂後火化，靈骨分別供奉承天寺、廣承岩、妙通寺三處。次年正月初一，即示意南返妙通寺，抵妙通寺後，即日以繼夜念佛，有時親手打木魚並囑弟子一起念佛。初五，師瞻視清澈，定靜安祥，毫無異樣。午後二時左右，忽告眾曰：「無來無去無代誌」並向徒眾頷首莞爾，安坐閉目，少頃，眾見師不動，趨前細察，乃知師已於念佛聲中，安然圓寂，終年九十五歲。
