PowerDNS is a DNS Server that runs on most Unix derivatives. PowerDNS features a large number of different backends ranging from simple BIND style zonefiles to relational databases and load balancing/failover algorithms. A DNS recursor is also included as a separate program.
PowerDNS provides:
- Authoritative ('hosting') DNS
- Resolving ('caching') DNS
- Enterprise Integration Readiness
- API to provision zones and records
- Debugging DevTools
PowerDNS serves DNS data as stored in plain text files, or in third party databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle or Sybase.
Such databases are typically provisioned either from a legacy DNS server, or via a third party web based management & provisioning interfaces.
